1) Jesus is the true...Here's where I get stuck.
1) Jesus is the true image of what God is like. OK.
2) So if the OT portrayal of God contradicts the truer NT portrayal of God in Jesus, the OT portrayal is most likely because God allowed himself to be misrepresented. OK.
3) We already know that God often allows himself to be misrepresented, because Jesus allowed himself to be misrepresented to the extent that he didn't even appear to be God. OK.

But then how can we trust that Jesus is the true image of what God is like, if God allowed himself to be misrepresented even in Jesus?

Maybe the Holy Spirit is the one who is supposed to fix all the misrepresentation and "...will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears" (John 16:13)? Because that doesn't seem to be working. There are a lot of devout, humble, and truth-seeking Christians who disagree about important matters of theology and practice. It seems God is still more than willing to be misrepresented and does not usually tell his friends what he is doing (John 15:15).

This makes me sad and frustrated and much less certain I or anyone else knows what God is like.Julia K.noreply@blogger.com
